Our data shows the specific neighborhoods in urban areas where law enforcement are mostly likely to take lives. Over the next year, we will be releasing neighborhood-level data for more U.S. cities.
Chicago
Since 2013 in Chicago, IL, there have been at least 112 people killed by law enforcement. Despite Black people comprising only 29% of the population, 76% of people killed by law enforcement were Black (excluding incidents where race is unknown).
This means that Black people are 30.6x more likely to be killed than White people.
The average age of a person killed by law enforcement in Chicago is 31. (30 for Black people and 41 for white people). 92% of people killed by law enforcement were male.
Since 2013 in Cook County excluding Chicago, IL, there have been at least 43 people killed by law enforcement. Despite Black people comprising only 16% of the population, 47% of people killed by law enforcement in Cook County were Black (excluding incidents where race is unknown). Since 2013 in St. Louis City, MO, there have been at least 53 people killed by law enforcement. Despite Black people comprising only 43% of the population, 81% of people killed by law enforcement were Black (excluding incidents where race is unknown). This means that Black people are 10.5x more likely to be killed than White people. The average age of a person killed by law enforcement in St. Louis City is 30. Since 2013, at least 13,395 people have been killed by law enforcement in the United States (As of 7/23/24). In 2023, there were 18,450 homicides, and 1352 police killings. This means that US law enforcement are responsible for at least 7% of all homicides in the US. US Law enforcement killings per year have ranged from 1,043 (2014) to 1,352 (2023).
From 2013-2023, US law enforcement killed 1147 people per year. Despite Black people comprising only 13% of the population in the US, 28.2% of people killed by law enforcement were Black (excluding incidents where race is unknown). This means that Black people are 2.9x more likely to be killed by law enforcement in the US. The average age of a person killed by law enforcement in the US is 37 years old (33 for Black people and 44 for white people).
